Case Study: Fintech App

Challenge: Design a mobile app to help users monitor their account balances on the go.

The Problem:

Users would like a better way to see their card balances in real time.

The Goal:

Design a mobile app to help users efficiently monitor their account balances and expenses on the go.

My Role:

  • UI/ UX Designer

My Responsibilities:

Paper and digital wireframes, low and high fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility and iterating on designs.

Understanding The Problem

I began by breaking down the prompts into questions I wanted to address:

  • - How often do users make transactions while on the go?
  • - Are these local or international transactions?
  • - Per proximity, what features are needed to execute said transactions?
  • - How can they trust their transactions are safe, secure and timely?

I spoke with people across different income brackets, guiding the conversations with these questions. I then created an affinity diagram with post-its to organize key ideas that came out of these conversations.

Pain Points

Data:

  • Users need to understand the data. This in turn will help with the monitoring process.

Accessibility:

  • Very few platforms with the ability to view all their card balances and purchases.

Developing Use Cases

I went through some use cases and personas to make a list of features toinclude. I also did some used crazy 8's to sketch out some screens to help me understand the user flow and get a rough understanding of structure.

Prototyping

Digital Wireframes

As the initial design phase continued, I made it a point to base the screen designs on findings and feedback from user research. Easy sharing options came in handy while creating these wireframes seeing users prefer having options to relay their information.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

During the lo-fi prototype design phase, I focused more on the visual appearance and transition fluency while making sure the user experience would foster a feeling of trust and confidence.

High-Fidelity Mockups

Although earlier designs postulated a birds-eye view of their expenses, the usability studies showed that the users were more keen on seeing their most current expenses as opposed to their weekly.

Final Mockups

High-Fidelity Prototype

The final hi-fi prototype presented a better user flow and provided a more efficient way to monitor user account balances.

Reflection + Lesson Learned

I learned to be more open to different alternatives and analyze their pros as well as cons. Often times, design is a trade-off between multiple considerations, and the decision depends on the core needs of the user and the usage context.

Next Steps

  • First off, I would like to further explore a lot of the major concepts I played around with in my sketches and low fidelity wireframes. See how we can curate a better user experience for our customers.

Little intro text

I would like to explore the sign up process, maybe include a feature at the start to help them automatically add recipients from their local contacts.

  • I would also like to conduct more user research to better determine new areas of need.
